My mission to create art originates from the sheer joy of being able to create an image that suggests a plausible reality to another viewer.
My recent series Fingering the Blind God manipulates the traditional imagery of horror and fantasy to examine the complexities of identity and purpose, within our absurd modern rituals of fear and paranoia. I view these intertwined populist genres as the twin stepchildren of Myth, still lurking in the bowels of the information age, guiding us toward rational acceptance of the dark forces in the world.
The paintings’ subjects are a cast of subconscious personalities, who act out their vignettes in the shadowy regions of a twenty-first century that invests an unusual amount of its resources on systems of control and deceit.
I work with a combination of oil, tempera, charcoal, and ink, using modifications of traditional glazing techniques. I frequently paint with my fingers and incorporate additional ingredients within each oil layer, such as hair, dirt, dust, blood, and sand.
