And so it goes...

Penelope Przekop

Penelope Przekop's art explores and exposes how close-mindedness can stifle individuals, relationships, and society in various ways. Her use of black and white as a prison provides a captivating contrast to the vibrant colors she chooses to depict real life in all its complex beauty. Her work addresses topics such as fundamentalism, sexuality, relationships, and her philosophy, which centers on accepting and embracing life's mental, physical, and situational aberrations as the norm rather than the exception. Przekop writes a popular blog, Aberration Nation, which includes interviews of individuals who have faced and/or continue to live with various aberrations or differences such as bipolar disorder, autism, homosexuality, being a loner, abandonment, and alcoholism.

Przekop is a creative triple threat, having written non-fiction and fiction as well as being an emerging artist. Her creative endeavors share a common theme, which she hopes to build upon moving forward. Small Press Bookwatch has hailed her debut novel, Aberrations, as deftly written, very edgy, engaging, insightful, and fascinating! 5 Stars!

Vincent van Gogh said that painting is a faith, and it imposes the duty to
disregard public opinion. As an author and an emerging artist, my goal is to create both literature and art that simultaneously includes and transcends the more obvious purposes of these endeavors: entertainment, beauty, and expression. In doing so, I intend to disregard public opinion by creating what I see through my own mind’s eye, which incorporates my experiences, intellect, ideas, knowledge, and philosophies. My goal is to capture unique and lasting impressions that are both thought-provoking and timeless.

I'm an author who began painting after having the urge to do so for several years. As a start, I created a series of paintings entitled, Child Eyes. Rather than actual child eyes, these eyes refer to the child within us who never seems to go away completely, perhaps in some more than others. The style is childlike as I pulled from the type of art I focused on as a child, which I felt was appropriate for this idea. Two of these works are shown here: Child Eyes Crossed and Child Eyes Boxed. Eventually, my initial focus on child eyes evolved into a more mature eye style that continues to be contemporary, expressive, and thematically related. These pieces make up a new series, Human Nature, which I am continuing to develop.

Through painting, I enjoy the process of extracting and incorporating the visual images in my mind to portray a higher meaning that encompasses more than simply what the eye can see. Even as an author, there are few words to describe the thrill of watching what I see and feel and think internally come to life on the canvas. It is a fantastical, liberating experience that highly complements my writing endeavors. I now view writing and painting as two sides of a coin. Until I flipped the coin and began to paint, I did not fully grasp the value of that which I held in the palm of my hand. I can’t wait to see what the next few years bring in terms of my creative output. I invite you to watch my progress!
