Doğan Paksoy is one of the most influential figures in the Turkish art scene as a painter, gallery owner, publisher and director of several art institutions, organizations and international fairs.He ıs the president of All the Galleries in Turkey last 11 years . He was born on 20th December 1955, in Ceyhan a southern town of Turkey and after his completion elementary, secondary and high school study in Ceyhan, he enrolled to Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1976. Paksoy was an outstanding student during his study at the Academy and participated to the “Atelier Exhibition” of Is Bank Parmakkapi Art Gallery in 1979. He had his first solo exhibition at Galata Art Gallery after his graduation in 1981 and his art awarded with the 2nd Prize in the Sir Osman Hamdi Painting Competition and the signal reward of jury at 3rd Golden Palette Painting Competition in the same year. He has been exhibited in many solo and group shows abroad, first of all in Germany, Sweden and Belgium besides other countries.

Dogan Paksoy founded Tesvikiye Art Gallery in 1977 with his brother Sahin Paksoy, which has become one of the most important centers for modern and contemporary Turkish painting. Besides local artists he also exhibited international painters in his gallery. Tesvikiye Art Gallery has been like a “school” for young artists to find their way in fine arts under the kind guidance and supervision of Mr. Paksoy. The young artists who had their first exhibition in Tesvikiye Art Gallery became significant names of the Turkish art scene later. Dogan Paksoy, who is one of the first names to mention as figurative painter in the contemporary Turkish art scene, has located the city-focused social criticism to the axis of his artistic orientation during his search for originality in 80s. He had some group shows under the name of “Authentic Group” with the artists who have a similar figurative tendency in his generation.

However, his unique and masterful art was beyond any category to locate and it was always a great difficulty for the contemporary art critics to analyze the rich dimensions of Mr. Paksoy’s art. Paksoy has continued his art activities as the owner and director of Tesvikiye Art Gallery since 1977 and his contribution to the Turkish art scene is ranged in a wide scale from publishing art magazines to being president of an art fair and his works and production are broadened from painting to art dealing and organization of international art fairs. He began to publish Turkiye’de Sanat (Art in Turkey) in 1991 and after this successful magazine he published another one, Gencsanat (Young Art) Magazine which continues still and has become the voice of contemporary arts in Turkey. Modern tradition of “art criticism” in Turkey is based on these magazines and many famous art critics of the country firs started to write in Gencsanat and Turkiye’de Sanat. Dogan Paksoy had a very crucial role in the foundation of several art fairs in Turkey, such as Istanbul Art Fair, Artistanbul and ArtBosphorus.

All the art fairs he directed have been like bridges between Turkish and international art worlds and by this way, he has done an enormous contribution to the globalization process of contemporary arts in Turkey. As a prolific figure of Turkish art world, Dogan Paksoy has supported his country in many other subfields of contemporary arts. However, his greatest achievement has been his originality and creativity in painting and his work considered as wonderful samples of art where reality/realism dances with the deepest levels of fantasy and in these beautiful dance we have a difficulty to follow the foot steps of the master sometimes.
